    "Our Past, Your Future"

Remus Area Museum, 324 S. Sheridan, Remus

You are invited to see Three New Displays – Early Communications, Rural Schools, and, Remus Cooperative Creamery -  at the Remus Museum.  Perhaps you shared a story, loaned or donated an item of historical note, or, helped to fund the project.  Your participation made a difference!  Bring your children and grandchildren and show them how the community has developed over the last century.  Refreshments will be served.

    early communications

From the early use of bells to announce an emergency, call children to school or farmhands in for supper, early postal delivery, the telegraph to telephones, the progress in communications has helped the area to flourish.  The display will also feature a working switchboard, a horse drawn mail hack and interactive areas for children.   (PHOTOS: At left, Wanda [Haney] Esch as a “Hello” girl and Remus mail carriers.)

    Rural schools

From one-room schoolhouses to consolidation, this display of photos, commencement memorabilia, school desks, books, teacher contracts and more show the massive changes that have taken place over the last century.  (PHOTO: At left, a Remus school bus.)

    Remus Cooperative creamery

“A group of farmers banded together in 1905 to sell their cream.  In 1917, they formed the Remus Co-operative Creamery Co. and bought co-op shares. It became the centerpiece of the community.”   Remus Butter soon became a household name.  Come see artifacts from the original Creamery, photos, documents and more.

This project was made possible with funding from the Blanchard Telephone Company, an OPASTCO member and FRED grant awardee, Mecosta County Community Foundation, Remus Heritage Days, a gift card from Meijer’s, a discount from Remus Lumber, and, financial support from memberships.

Can’t make it for the whole weekend?  Come to the Wheatland Festival on Sunday!

Remus -   While thousands will brave whatever weather Mother Nature brings to attend the 3-day Wheatland Music Organization’s 37th annual festival taking place near Remus, Michigan from September 10 - 12th, others will opt for a Sunday only ticket.  Sunday only tickets may be purchased after 8 a.m. on Sunday, September 12th at the Pierce Road gate house for $25 adults/seniors and $3 for children 5-12.

Sunday only attendees will find dozens of traditional arts workshops, concerts and demonstrations to enjoy, along with impromptu jam sessions, arts and crafts, and, a wide variety of unique food vendors across the 160-acre site.  Wheatland brings cultures and traditions to its audiences from across the continent and abroad.

Michigan artists usher in the first morning set on Main Stage with a Gospel Hour followed by one of the last Virginia Tidewater a cappella gospel quartets in the U.S. - the Paschall Brothers.  Later in the afternoon, Wheatland’s long time friend and Americana folk artist Joel Mabus and Trio returns for his 8th visit!  Nic Gareiss and Friends (17 friends to be exact) present a “percussive dance dream team” with dance and musical styles ranging from Southern Appalachian to French Canadian, Irish, Scottish, Spanish and Swedish!  Two bands, the bluegrass Hot Mud Family and the lively Cajun band BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet return to grace the Wheatland stage for their third appearance in three decades.  BeauSoleil will share traditions that have been kept alive over 200 years by the Acadiana parish descendents of Louisiana – musical history best experienced on a dance floor! The final set of the weekend begins at 5:30 p.m. with Grammy award winner singer-songwriter and California based Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women.

Also on Sunday, teens and young adults can make their own jewelry and learn to juggle at MiddleGround while children and their parents take part in a family dance at the new Dance Stage or make arts and crafts on Kids Hill.  Festival goers will become immersed at the Centennial Stage where Michigan’s Open Range group described as “three part harmonies that wring the tears and the joy from lyrics about love, revenge, loneliness, heartbreak, cow towns and outlaws” perform followed by the foottapping Quebecois musical culture of the Montreal band Genticorum.

The final date for mail in weekend ticket orders is August 27th, 2010 and online tickets orders end September 3rd, 2010.  For a map to the site and more information see www.wheatlandmusic.org.

    CALENDAR FOR MICHIGAN

    Mecosta: http://www.mecostaonline.com/rivermusic.html

Michigan is home to more than one hundred ethnic groups, and the exhibit focuses on some of their contributions to Michigan's foodways -- pasties, cudighi, coneys, and paczki, to mention just a few. Local foodways events, sometimes based in an ethnic or religious tradition, also pepper the state -- sauerkraut suppers, fish fries, and pow wows. In such cases the culture, history, and meaning of the foods are emphasized.
