Remus -- The Remus Masonic Temple building was donated to the Remus Area Historical Society, Inc. in a ceremony on Thursday, June 24. Past Masters such as Bill Dennis and Jerry Stickler along with many members of the Eastern Stars were on hand to talk about the long history of the fraternal organization dating back to 1913. Also presenting were Jim Lentz, Master and John DeJonge, Senior Warden, representing the Lou B. Winsor Lodge 263 in Reed City who assumed ownership of the building after a consolidation in October 2004.
Linda Howard, President of the new Remus Area Historical Society, Inc., thanked the Masons for their generous gift to the Society and to the entire community. A building and organization that has meant so much to generations of Mason and Eastern Star families will live on in the new museum with a display featuring their contributions.
The purpose of the Remus Area Historical Society is to preserve and celebrate the area’s rich heritage – including Wheatland, Broomfield, Rolland, Millbrook, Morton, Sheridan and Colfax Townships of Mecosta County. The group is still forming and welcomes new members, contributions, supplies and historical items. Families, businesses and organizations in the area are encouraged to prepare displays featuring historical printed materials such as family genealogies, newspaper articles, or old postcards and handbills, manuscripts such as charts, surveys, and property records, museum materials such as pictures and photographs, and objects such as tools, furniture, clothing and other items that depict early life, conditions, and events.
Museum Volunteers and temporary displays are needed for the upcoming July 15- 17th Remus Heritage Days.
