REMUS AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The Remus Area Historical group is being formed to preserve our heritage.  We hope to generate interest, encourage historical research, and bring a better understanding among our citizens of how the settlers and early residents of the area laid the foundations for our current way of life.  The area includes Remus as well as Broomfield, Colfax, Millbrook, Morton, Rolland, Sheridan, Hinton, Martiny, Colfax, and Wheatland Townships.    The group would like to collect and preserve significant materials and make them accessible to the public.  Anyone who is interested in and enjoys history can become a member. We welcome new acquisitions and members. If you have materials such as documents, photos, old news clippings, local stories or poetry, as well as historical items, that you would donate or loan for duplicating please advise Char Lenon or Linda Howard.  You can also sign up for an oral history to share your stories or the genealogy of your family or make a donation in honor or in memory of someone.

The next meeting for RAHS is To Be Announced!
We hope everyone has had a chance to go by the museum and see our new sign(s). Tom Donley donated an original school bell from the Baumann School (which previously belonged to Jerry Schiffer), and Gale Esch constructed the means to display it. They also donated supplies and hauled rocks and dirt to make it look beautiful with the help of Roger Orvis (a very helpful friend from Clare). Be sure to check it out!

The Antique Quilt Show held at the museum during Remus Heritage Days turned out GREAT!  Close to 30 quilts were displayed and we received a lot of wonderful comments about them and the work that Jann and Dowayne Parks and Sherry Marks did to present such a nice show. There's already someone interested in entering a quilt next year.

The Ice Cream Social held at the museum on Saturday during Heritage Days was also received well. We made around $70 in donations and the homemade strawberry topping donated by Howard Farms was the "BEST". Linda Howard put it all together and Tom Marks and Alice Welling stuck it out all day in the heat to serve any passers-by a cool and refreshing treat. YUM!

We also need to thank Iris Fisher for loaning us the nice historical display of New Hope Methodist Church during Heritage Days.

Can't forget to mention that our new Heritage Cookbook was made available during the weekend and we've already sold around $500 worth. Thanks goes to everyone who contributed or worked on putting the cookbook together including Alice Welling and Clothy Royce who sold almost $200 during the Senior Program at the Town Hall Sunday. (Order form attached.)

Last, but not least, thanks to Tom and Sherry Marks for beautifying the grounds for the big event.  We had the most museum visitors to date at one time.

COOKBOOK

Order your Heritage Recipes cookbook today featuring old-timey Michigan recipes that range from Grandma Cork’s Plum pudding (calling for suet as one of the ingredients), to soap making, cow liniment, and a Sausage making recipe that passed down through the Wernette family.

Remus Area Historical Society, a new 501c3 organization, recently combined history, humanities and food in a Heritage Recipes cookbook.  The book is available for sale as a way to raise money for the organization and new museum.  Inside you will find a collection of recipes passed through, and favored by generations of families residing in ten townships that border the eastern edge of Mecosta County and the western edge of Isabella County in Michigan’s lower peninsula.  Some family photos and histories are included along with household cleaning tips, cooking for large groups, and other rural favorites.
