Wheatland Township Library Press Release

Press Release

The Wheatland Township Library had two millage proposals on the November 5th ballot.  Both of these millage proposals were renewals for library operational funds and did not involve an increase in taxes for local residents. The first proposal was for 4/10 of a mill.  The second proposal was for 8/10 of a mill.  While the proposal for 4/10 mill passed by 67 votes, the second proposal for 8/10 of a mill proposal lost by one vote.  After speaking with Marcee Purcell, Mecosta County Clerk, the Wheatland Township Library Board voted at their November 15th meeting to ask for a recount.  The election recount was held on December 10th.  The outcome remained the same.

The loss of the election means the Wheatland Township Library has lost 2/3 of its annual income.  Moving forward, the Library will have approximately $19,000 to operate annually which is not enough to continue providing many of the resources, books, and programs currently available to the community. The Wheatland Township Library’s future is uncertain and the Library Board is facing some tough decisions.  Despite the failed millage, the Wheatland Library received a grant for library automation and will move forward with its plan to automate its collection which will make library materials searchable online and by app.  The library hopes to complete this project during Spring 2025.

Many community members have stepped forward to offer help. Cassidy Velthouse and her partner, Jake, have offered to hold a Library fundraiser at the Remus Tavern.  The date has been set for Sunday, April 13th at 1:00 P.M.

Library Director, Becky Kurtz, stated “While the library’s road is uncertain, we will get through this”.

If you have questions visit the library at 207 Michigan Avenue in Remus or visit the library’s website at www.remus.org/library.
