You are cordially invited to an Open House on Saturday, September 19 unveiling renovations made to the Little River Schoolhouse located within School Section Lake Veterans’ Park, 9003 90th Avenue, Mecosta, MI.
A Ribbon Cutting event will be held at noon followed by a 1 p.m. presentation by Ray Pointer. Pointer is a descendant of the Berry family that built the first school on the site in 1877 and is the producer of The Mecosta-Morton Video Tour found on YouTube - an award-winning educational presentation about the unique history of Mecosta, Michigan, a village that embraced the concept of diversity and equality years before the Civil Rights Movement. He will discuss how the school reflects the history of education in Michigan, the influence of lumbering, integration of neighbors and cooperative behavior.
Pointer, earned his Commercial Art degree from Cass Technical High School, a B.A. degree in Film and Television Production at Wayne State University, Graduate credits from The University of Southern California, Department of Cinema/Television, served as a Motion Picture Specialist in the U.S. Navy and was Adjunct Professor in the Digital Media Department at Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids.
As an America250MI awardee, Remus Area Historical Society (RAHS), in collaboration with area organizations, led a community wide effort to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The project inspired by the Berry’s was called “A Nation Within Itself.” The state grant, combined with local funds, was used to restore the 1905 Little River Schoolhouse, offer educational programming including a unique Colonial Social Gathering that celebrated freedom, democracy and equity.
