Computers for Genealogy A Four-part Workshop Series

When: Thursdays, November 7th, 21st, December 5th and 12th 2019

From 10:30 a.m. – 12:30p.m.

Where: Morton Township Library in Mecosta Michigan (Bring your own laptop. Limited computers available in adjoining room.)

Cost: $20 for the series

Format: First hour—instruction, second hour—guided practice

Max enrollment: 10—to ensure individualized instruction

Session One: Basic Computer Organizational Skills (November 7th)

· How do you keep track of all the information you collect? Participants will:

o Learn to create, name and/or rename folders to organize data

o Practice moving files, pictures and documents to appropriately named folders (Come prepared with a list of your family surnames)

Session Two: Basic Computer Skills Continued (November 21st)

· Review and practice from Session One

· Learn and practice how to find a file you have saved

· Practice renaming and/or relocating files

· File safety and back-up

Session Three: Tips & Tricks for familysearch.org and ancestry.com (Dec. 5th)

· Build your skills to make the most of online Genealogy sites

· Learn strategies and tips for effective searches

· Discuss the importance of starting and keeping a research log

· How to cite your sources.

Session Four: Finding primary source documents and photos (December 12th)

· Learn where to look for free primary source documents

· How to save a file with appropriate naming strategies and save to your newly created (from Session One), organized digital file
